Des Moines, Iowa
A complicated, eight-phase project included a new commons and instrumental suite added to connect and clarify the circulation within an historic building that had many previous additions. We fitted the existing building with a new heat pump system and electrical system and added elevators to make the entire building accessible.
Following a successful referendum, this project provided a new, much-needed elementary school.
This comprehensive remodeling improved energy efficiency, security and interior finish included a variable refrigerant flow heat pump system, new doors, new fire code improvements, and new floors and ceilings.
After working closely with the school district to assess facility conditions, prioritize needs, and identify potential projects, Design Alliance completed several projects including a Middle School remodeling as well as work at their Washington and Schuler Elementary Schools.
After several failed referenda, Design Alliance was asked to prepare a six-phase plan to improve facilities and work with a citizen’s committee to provide accurate information for a successful referendum. The resulting project included new commons and kitchen, music rooms, 1,000-seat gymnasium and technical education classroom adjacent to the existing high school.
After several funding referenda failed, Design Alliance was asked to conduct a comprehensive facility analysis and assessment which led to a smaller project that was approved by voters. The project included new finishes and new, energy-efficient HVAC and electrical systems plus a small addition that significantly improved circulation in the building. We then updated the facility analysis and a second referendum also passed for locker rooms and a new gymnasium.
Following consideration of several options and a community referendum, Design Alliance accomplished a new addition that included a classroom wing, 1,000-seat gymnasium, locker rooms, student commons and kitchen.
