Case Study: State of Iowa Department of Public Safety
All Design Alliance projects strive for economy, energy efficiency, and appropriateness. Design Alliance presently has a project pursuing LEED Certification, which was a priority of the owner since the inception of the project.
Built in 1919, this 5-story International Harvester Implement Dealership turned storage warehouse located at the southwest corner of the Capitol Complex underwent a complete renovation and addition. The building now houses the headquarters for the administrative leadership of the State Patrol, Division of Criminal Investigation, Fire Marshal's Office, Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the Commissioner's Office. The building will be LEED Certified.
Some of the project’s LEED components include storm water pollution prevention; alternative transportation solutions; reductions in heat island effect and light pollution; use of renewable sources and selections (reducing ozone depletion); diverting waste from landfills by re-using materials where appropriate; selecting products which are regionally produced and contain no VOCS, thus increasing indoor and outdoor environmental quality; and providing natural daylight and highly efficient building control systems to reduce overall energy needs.
Green / Leed Benefits
Today, more than ever, it’s critical to minimize adverse environmental consequences of our built environment. This can be done through appropriate site design, water usage, energy conservation, material usage, and indoor environmental quality.
What’s the benefit of energy efficiency? It pays off through lower energy costs and reduced production of greenhouse gases. Energy efficient design can also result in energy company incentives.
